WorldSSP300 Kicks Off With Kawasaki Double Win

The 2023 FIM Supersport 300 World Championship (WorldSSP300) got underway at Assen in the Netherlands between April 21-23 with a field of 32 young riders vying for early success. For one Kawasaki rider, Petr Svoboda (Füsport - RT Motorsports by SKM Kawasaki) it was a dream start as he was eventually presented with not one but two race winner’s trophies.

“The first race was difficult for me because I struggled in Superpole in the mixed conditions. I wanted to be in the first group as soon as possible from the start. I made up some places and found some pace and then waited for the last five laps and managed to win. I didn’t expect this, but the win came to me. I was second on the last lap but Samuel [Di Sora] made a mistake and I managed to overtake him on the back straight. Then I could stay in P1 and finish it. The second race was crazy, like always. This season my target was to finish every race in the top ten, maybe top five, every race. So I did not expect this weekend. It was amazing.”

Samuel Di Sora

“I led the way for most of the first race, so I’m a little disappointed I didn’t win. Unfortunately, in the congestion of the final turns, I made a mistake and wasn’t as incisive as I could have been in the final push to the line. The bike is very fast, and for this, I have to thank the team - they’ve all worked so hard. I also want to thank the sponsors and everyone who supports us.”

“I am happy with the effort today. The rhythm was fast and when I was in front I was doing 1:34 laps. I could see the gap to the riders behind so I knew I was not shaking them at that rhythm. I knew Alvaro would come past sooner or later, as his rhythm was very fast on Friday. When he did I just dug in and tried to do everything I could, but with seven laps to go I made a small mistake and then there was a small gap that lost me the slipstream. I was taking so many liberties just to be there, but you can’t do it every lap. I was losing a lot with my front tyre at the end, even on the harder front option. But we got solid points and I felt like we had some positives from that race.”

Alex Lowes

“This weekend has been a bit better and when we have grip in the bike we can be quite fast. The Superpole Race was quite good because I was one of the only guys who could stay with the front three. The race, at eight laps, was a bit shorter than normal. The pace was fast and I felt OK on the limit. Everybody is riding on the limit. I lost the front on the sighting lap before Race Two. Starting from the back of the grid it was going to be tough, but my pace was a bit better after we had made a few changes on the bike. I was able to keep my front tyre grip for five or six laps longer and I was faster than the day before.”

“In Superpole I was just about able to score fifth place and so I started from row two in the opening race. I pushed hard right from the start and this meant that the tyre soon showed signs of wear. Unfortunately, in the final stages the front tire was completed finished and I had to slow down. My seventh-place finish does not reflect our overall pace, nor our potential. We will try to make up for this in Sunday’s race.”
